The Reality of Teak: A Luxury Material Under Pressure Teak has long been the benchmark in boat decking, known for its durability and timeless appearance. But today, the reality behind natural teak wood is changing—and it’s something every boat owner and builder needs to understand. Teak doesn’t grow everywhere. In fact, natural teak forests exist in only a few countries—primarily Myanmar, India, Laos, and Thailand. And those forests are shrinking. The area of natural teak forest has declined by over 385,000 hectares globally in recent decades, and in countries such as India and Myanmar, millions of hectares have been lost or degraded. As a result, old-growth teak, once the benchmark for marine use, is now extremely limited. This matters because teak is a slow-growing hardwood, often requiring 20–80 years to mature properly. However, due to demand, trees are increasingly harvested before they reach that stage. The reason Burmese teak specifically became the global benchmark for maritime use lies in its extraordinary natural oil and silica content. Unlike plantation-grown subspecies or younger trees, old-growth teak from Myanmar develops a dense, saturated cellular structure over many decades. These internal oils act as a permanent, built-in water repellent that shields the wood from rot, fungal decay, and the corrosive effects of constant saltwater exposure. Furthermore, the high silica content provides a natural non-slip texture that is essential for deck safety—a characteristic often lacking in faster-growing alternatives. Consequently, settling for inferior species or being misled by “teak-labeled” substitutes often leads to a deck prone to warping and premature degradation, meaning the buyer pays a premium price for a vastly inferior lifespan. To meet demand, the industry has shifted toward plantation-grown teak. While this helps supply, it introduces new challenges, namely, faster-grown wood with lower durability, a greater variation in quality, and less proven long-term performance in marine environments. Global assessments show a clear trend: Supply from natural teak forests is declining, while plantation teak is rapidly increasing. That shift is fundamentally changing the material. For anyone considering real teak decking for boats, this is the practical reality: Thinner planks (often around 8mm) Increased splitting, cracking, and movement Shorter lifespan Higher maintenance demands You’re no longer getting the teak that built its reputation. Despite all this, teak remains expensive, yet its performance is less reliable than ever, which is a difficult trade-off in marine conditions where failure is costly. Boat builders, shipyards, and owners are starting to adapt, and there has been a shift in the marine industry. The focus is moving toward materials that offer predictable performance, long-term durability, lower maintenance, and better environmental responsibility. The final thought on the matter is this: natural teak earned its reputation over decades, but the material available today is no longer the same. With natural forests declining, quality becoming inconsistent, and costs remaining high, the shift is clear. This is where synthetic teak decking stands apart. ICA Group’s latest innovation NUTEAK XT is said to have bridged the gap between real teak and synthetic alternatives. NUTEAK XT not only replicates the look of real teak decking and finishings but also addresses the environmental and performance issues. Modern synthetic teak offers consistent, long-lasting, engineered quality with no cracking, shrinking, or splitting issues. PVC decking is recyclable and removes the pressure from the ever-diminishing natural teak forests. Not to mention low-maintenance, which meens less time sanding and more time on the water.

PVC Welding: Faster, Stronger, Longer-Lasting When it comes to yacht decking, PVC welding offers significant advantages over traditional caulking, primarily in speed, durability, and longevity. While caulking might seem like the quicker option initially, PVC welding provides a superior long-term solution. SPEED Although the initial tooling setup and training for PVC welding requires some effort, the actual process of joining the decking planks is remarkably fast. Once welded, the deck is essentially ready for use, unlike caulked decks which require curing time before they can be walked on, not to mention hours of sanding once it’s cured. This translates to less downtime for your vessel. DURABILITY Welded PVC creates a continuous, seamless surface. This fusion makes the deck incredibly strong and resistant to harsh marine environments. It withstands UV exposure, chemical damage, and the constant flexing and movement inherent in a boat much better than caulking. Caulking, being a separate, flexible material, is more prone to cracking, peeling, and general wear and tear. LONGEVITY Because of its superior durability, a welded PVC deck lasts significantly longer than a caulked deck with far less maintenance. While caulking needs regular inspections and replacing every few years. A PVC welded deck also greatly reduces the risk of saltwater reaching the substrate. This can cause major problems including corrosion on aluminum, rust on steel, mold, and degradation of the fiberglass. In short, PVC welding provides a faster, stronger, and longer-lasting solution for yacht decking. The reduced downtime, superior durability, and extended lifespan make PVC welding the clear winner for boat owners seeking a truly robust and low-maintenance deck.

Why put a deck on my boat? The aesthetic of well designed teak boat decking is a major factor for most when it comes to whether or not to have a deck fitted on your boat. While the look and feel is a major factor let us first have a look at the other ways that a synthetic teak deck benefits your boat. Protection There are few areas on a boat that take as much of a beating as the deck. Together gelcoat and fiberglass are designed to deal with water, but sun and salt begin to test their limits. A gelcoats main defence against the sun is it’s gloss, which reflects heat. Regular polishing and waxing will keep your gelcoat glossy and its main UV defence strong. Oxidation, salt and wear will determine how long your gelcoat stays glossy. Once it loses its gloss it starts to absorb the sun’s rays which leads to drying, loss of flexibility and cracking. The gelcoat is what protects your fiberglass from hydrolysis and UV damage which can affect the structural integrity of your boat. If the boat has a core made of something other than fiberglass, it is even more important to make sure that it is never exposed to moisture. Once the core starts to rot it can be difficult and expensive to fix. Feet, shoes, anchors and equipment greatly increase wear on the deck areas of your boat. Swim platforms and areas used for boarding and loading are usually the most at risk. Adding synthetic teak decking to these areas will essentially give them a 4.8mm thick long lasting, UV resistant, shock absorbing suit of armor. Nuteak is 100% non-absorbent, so once the panel is glued down and the edges sealed with the marine grade, UV resistant sealant, the structural components below are thoroughly protected from abrasion and the elements. Safety Nuteak is non-slip or non-skid, wet or dry for safety under any conditions. Compared to most marine anti-slip surfaces, synthetic teak non-skid is among the best. A large percentage of boating accidents and injuries are a result of slippery surfaces. Unfortunate injuries can ruin any day on the water. With the high quality non-slip surface of Nuteak you can keep the odds in your favor. Aesthetics The look and feel of a nautical teak deck creates a luxury atmosphere like no other. Nuteak boasts the most realistic synthetic teak look available, without the splinters and maintenance that comes with a real teak deck. We can deck almost any part of your boat with multiple design options, from a modern minimalist look to a traditional nautical look or a balance of the two. What areas of my boat need Synthetic Teak? That depends on what you want to add to your boat. If you want to preserve your gel coat and the structural components below, install synthetic teak on high-traffic areas like swim platforms and loading areas. If you would like to increase the safety of your vessel, add high-quality, non-slip, synthetic teak to high-risk areas like steps and catwalks. If the nautical look and atmosphere are what you are after then put Nuteak in any areas you feel it will improve the look. REQUEST A SAMPLE FIND A DISTRIBUTOR CONTACT US

Which Marine Flooring is Coolest? As mentioned in the video, temperature is a topic that comes up a lot in the world of synthetic teak. In this article I would like to address the temperature benefits of different marine flooring materials and their short falls. https://youtu.be/XZ0eZXu6YCs This particular video was focused on the temperature difference between synthetic teak colors, we compared Nuteak’s colors and those of a competitor. Even in extremely harsh sun the difference was not particularly great, and I am sure the difference would have been even smaller if I was able to get the competitors’ flooring completely clean. I scrubbed that small piece of synthetic teak vigorously with soap, water and a stiff brush for around 20 minutes before I decided it was good enough for the test. Interestingly enough the reason that particular synthetic teak is more difficult to clean is the technique they employ to keep the decking cooler. So how do you make a material cooler, and is it worth it? Aeration Aeration is the most common way to cool down a material. The reason it works is two fold, aeration lowers the thermal mass of a material and an air cavity does add insulation. Older houses would leave an air cavity between a double wall to act as insulation, and modern insulation often involves highly aerated materials. There are two main types of material aeration, Closed cell aeration and open cell aeration. As the name implies Closed cell aeration creates a sealed cell containing air. Open celled aeration creates cells or bubbles that are connected and air (or water) can flow freely between them like in a sponge. Sounds easy enough, so why don’t we just aerate all of our materials? Durability Density and flexibility are the main factors that make up a durable flooring material. EVA Foam is probably the most aerated of all marine flooring options, and thus, in most cases, it is the coolest underfoot. EVA Foam has proven to be an average of 2.5 degrees cooler than Nuteak in most tests, but Nuteak has a life expectancy more than 4 times that of EVA Foam. When synthetic teak competitors decide to aerate their material for the temperature benefits, they know that if they aerate it too much they would lose durability. That is why the percentage of aeration used in synthetic teak is extremely small, if any, in order to preserve the durability of the material. Some even use something called Nano foaming which simply creates microscopic air bubbles in the material. As a result, any temperature benefit is microscopic as well. Aside from obvious durability concerns, there are 2 main reasons why Nuteak has decided not to aerate the material at all. The first is keeping it clean. While competitors use a closed cell foaming technique, the highest layer of bubbles that touch the surface are perforated and exposed to fill up with small particles of dirt. Because the bubbles are very small it does not allow stains or dirt to sink deep into the material, but it gets deep enough to make the surface look dirty. This will result in a scrub with soap and water to keep it looking good, and in some cases, a light sand will do the trick. Each scrub or sand perforates and exposes the next layer of tiny air bubbles. The increased amount of scrubbing and sanding adds a large amount of wear and tear that decreases the lifespan of your deck. This is why Nuteak offers a 20-30-year warranty, double what most high-quality synthetic teaks offer. The other reason is expansion and contraction. Most materials, including plastic, expand and contract a small percentage with temperature. It is also a known fact that air expands and contracts with temperature change. If you have ever inflated a small boat on the beach and then put it into the cold water, you will have seen how the boat loses pressure. The first time this happened to me I was convinced my boat had a puncture. Once you have increased the air pressure to operate in cold water, you will need to let a little air out when leaving it in the sun on the beach, otherwise, it could burst from the pressure. With open cell foaming, there will be no difference in expansion and contraction because the increased air pressure can simply escape. But with closed cell foaming the size of the bubbles or cells is likely to expand and contract with temperature, thus increasing the amount of expansion and contraction that is normal for PVC material. While expansion and contraction are not a big problem for the material itself, they can impact the materials around it, weakening the glue and substrate over time. I admit this information has digressed somewhat from simply finding out which marine decking option is the coolest. What it boils down to is that all PVC decks are extremely close in temperature, so close in fact that your feet won’t know the difference. So perhaps temperature is not the best criteria by which to choose your flooring. Choose one with the look that you want, and the durability to uphold your investment for many years to come.

How to choose the right deck design for your boat Nuteak is a versatile material with multiple color choices and many design options, this leaves you as the boat owner with a few decisions to make. We like to categorize designs into 3 main categories to make these decisions easier. 1. no margins Fairly self-explanatory a no-margin design will have no margins, with clean lines going from bow to stern. This is usually the most cost-effective design and delivers the same high-quality, non-slip surface that you would get from any Nuteak deck. 2. Part-margin or semi-margin designs Part margin designs offer a lot of freedom as the margins can be placed wherever they look best on your boat, the number of margins is limited to the outer edge of the deck and on top of hatch lids. If you want the detail of having margins outlining the edges of your deck but not emphasizing your hatches, the part margin design is the right choice for you. 3. Fully-margined A fully margined deck has margins around all of the edges of each panel, including on top of hatch lids, around hatch lids and around fittings. This creates a very luxurious look on larger boats but can make smaller boats look quite busy. In most cases this is the most expensive design option as it requires the most labor to fabricate. How to choose… The best design and color for your boat will depend on a few factors such as practicality and personal taste. If your aim is to uphold the resale value of your boat you should probably choose the most popular color (Teak/Black) and a design that emphasizes the boat’s strong points, in order to appeal to the most buyers. If your boat is your pride and joy, you have already given it countless hours of love and attention, and it will never leave your family, then choose a color and design that suits your boat and your personality. The right deck for the right boat You can use margins to create the look and feel that you want. An incredibly busy deck with a lot of margins in a small space will look great on a speed boat or a luxury sports fisher, but will feel out of place on a leisure vessel. Margins emphasize whatever they frame, so make sure to have margins around all of your favorite fittings, and avoid placing margins around things you would rather hide like drain holes. If you want your hatches to be as discreet as possible then don’t add margins on or around them, If you are particularly proud of your hatches and want them to stand out then by all means frame them with margins. Sports boats are designed to blow your hair back, impress your friends, or bring home some big fish, so a busy fully margined deck adds excitement to the look and feel of your boat. Leisure boats on the other hand strive to create a spacious and luxurious appearance. However, in most cases there is not that much space to work with. By framing the outer edges of your deck and leaving your hatches as discreet as possible you will make the area feel larger. If you have a lot of space to work with and you are not worried about making the area feel cramped, then add margins on top of your hatches to provide some luxury detail to the look. Restoration When restoring a classic, Nuteak is a popular choice. Nuteak is the most realistic synthetic teak available and thus can be used to recreate designs similar to that of most original teak decks. Professionally built real teak decks will often have joggles. Joggles are necessary when building a timber deck because they prevent sharp edges that create weak points in the deck. With synthetic teak however joggles are not necessary, but if you particularly like the joggles you can speak to your deck fabricator about adding them to your deck. A thick teak or bull-nose look is associated with high end luxury teak decks and is also achievable with Nuteak. By welding the Nuteak to descend over the edges of steps and swim platforms we can create the illusion of a thick piece of teak without the added weight. These are labor intensive to fabricate and it will add to the cost of your deck, but the result is stunning. All 3 basic design categories will leave you with a beautiful, traditionally nautical look. A well thought out design will have your boat looking better than ever, and it may even prove to be a more cost effective way to achieve the look you want. If you like to stand out and break away from tradition a modern Nautical look can also be achieved by using Nuteaks King plank. King plank allows you to fabricate the deck or areas of the deck without lines. This adds a whole new world of possibilities to an already versatile product. If you have particular preferences on where your margins should be placed, you can clearly mark these on your template. Keep in mind that this will affect the price, so be sure to discuss it with your installer/fabricator before getting your quote. Nuteak does have a design consultant who can help you visualize and come up with a design that is tailored to your vessel and your taste. Contact us for more information.

You can use margins to create the look and feel that you want.

When restoring a classic, Nuteak is a popular choice.

Are there responsible applications for plastic? As a planet we need to rethink the way we use plastic. Around the world countries have taken steps to reduce the damage caused by tons of plastic waste. So why is plastic so dangerous and should we stop using plastics all together? The reason plastic is so dangerous is because it takes a very long time to decompose. This also happens to be one of plastics strengths as a material. In the early 1950s when plastic started being used commercially, nobody thought it would become such a problem. Since then plastics have come a long way, and yet, despite the combined efforts of governments, plastic waste is still a huge threat, particularly to our oceans. So are all plastics the problem? Plastics, being the incredible material that they are, not only last long but are also fairly strong, easy to manipulate and mold and relatively cost effective. All of these strengths mean that in many cases a product can have a lower carbon footprint if made from plastic as opposed to a biodegradable natural alternative. For example, a plastic bag can have a carbon footprint of less than 100 times that of a cotton bag. That however does not mean that we should rather make everything we possibly can out of plastic, it’s that kind of thinking that got us in this mess in the first place. “With great power comes great responsibility”. To use a material that lasts an incredibly long time to create products that are only intended for a single use or a short period of time, does not make sense. Some plastics are recyclable and others are not, but even if they are, only a small percentage make it all the way to a plastic recycling plant. Most end up in landfills, oceans and incinerators (burning plastic releases harmful toxins). If plastic were strictly only used for products with long term applications the waist would be much more concentrated and easier to recycle. The products themselves will still be able to benefit from the impressive properties of plastic, and the manufacture process will likely also have a lower carbon footprint than many other materials. We must also consider the materials saved when a synthetic is made from plastic. For example, Nuteak PVC synthetic teak fills the role of a teak deck without impacting endangered timbers. Burmese teak is under extreme pressure with almost no legally sustainable suppliers left in the world. The USA, EU and UK have imposed sanctions on the import of Burmese teak because of major environmental concerns due to illegal and irresponsible logging. Trees are also being harvested before they reach maturity which results in inferior timber. The high demand pushes up the price, which fuels illegal deforestation and results in the endangerment of certain plant species. Innovative long lasting applications for plastic are already used in many industries, including construction, agriculture and the marine industry. The durable, waterproof and non corrosive properties of most plastics result in high quality, long lasting products in these industries. Rather a durable plastic house, irrigation system or boat, lasting a very long time serving a constructive purpose than disposable plastics lasting a very long time devastating sea life in our oceans. At ICA Group we mostly develop marine products, the inspiration for which stems from a love of the ocean. So we take seriously our responsibility to conserve and protect our planet and oceans. Through innovation and responsible use of durable materials we strive to ease the pressure on endangered timbers and work towards a cleaner future. REQUEST A SAMPLE FIND A DISTRIBUTOR CONTACT US

Sustainability Trends in the Marine Industry Recent world events have seen price increases, supply chain interruptions and a movement towards a more sustainable way of doing things. How has the marine industry adjusted to meet demands on quality while still looking after the planet? 1. Monomaterial products Advancements in plastic technologies have increased durable, sodium and UV resistant products for the marine industry. Monomaterial products are a simple yet effective way to make plastic products more sustainable. While plastic has a lot of bad press at the moment it is still, in most cases, the most durable option for many marine products, with a carbon footprint considerably lower than natural alternatives. So why are mono-material plastic products better? Most plastic products are recyclable, so why do so many end up in the ocean if we can simply recycle them? There are many different types of plastic so the recycling process usually involves many hours of cleaning, separating and sorting. Most plastic bottles use a different plastic for the bottle and the lid, so they cannot simply be recycled together. This has made recycling a costly and time consuming process that many companies have tried to avoid. Mono-material products are made entirely from one type of material making recycling cheaper and easier. ICA Group’s Nuteak synthetic teak for example consists of only 1 UV stabilized PVC. The teak or gray colored plank, the black or white line and even the welding wires all consist of the same material and thus can easily be recycled together when the boat reaches the end of its lifespan. 2. Vinyl wrapping In a previous post (nuteak.com/why-put-a-deck-on-my-boat/) I elaborated on how Nuteak protects you and your boat’s gelcoat. Based on a similar principle vinyl wraps are also being used to lower the amount of maintenance your boat requires and prolong the life of your gelcoat. Vinyl is normally used for signage and artwork but you can also purchase a single color or even a clear sheet designed to simply protect your boat. With air release technologies these vinyl films are becoming easier to attempt as a DIY project. 3. 3D printing 3D printing technologies have progressed in leaps and bounds over the past few years. The list of materials that can be 3D printed is now very long, ranging from nylon and plastics to resins, fiberglass, carbon fiber, metals, wood and even concrete. Pellet fed printers make printing with recycled plastics easier as well. A major benefit to 3D printing is that it produces minimal material wastage and the result is usually extremely accurate. A variety of custom boat parts are now 3D printed because the digital files can be sent and printed anywhere in the world, greatly reducing transport time and cost. The size of the printer is one of the main limitations, in some cases segments are printed and joined together to form the final product. With a larger printer this is not necessary. In the marine industry a 24 foot boat has already been printed as 1 solid piece in less than 72 hours. As the technology grows we can expect 3D printing to form a big part of less wasteful production methods. ICA Group places a lot of emphasis on keeping up with the times. The recent increase in demand in the marine industry places a responsibility on all of us to find cleaner and less wasteful ways of doing things. Through responsible use of durable materials we can enjoy our oceans and rivers while looking after them for generations to come. REQUEST A SAMPLE FIND A DISTRIBUTOR CONTACT US
